War tunnels to remain

PA Wellington Gun emplacements and tunnels at Stony Battery on Waiheke Island are to be kept by the Crown as a public reserve, but some Crown land there will still be sold, says the Minister of Lands. Mr Elworthy. After talks with a local landowner, Mr John Spencer, it was agreed that the World War II fortifications should remain Crown property, as a

reserve with suitable public access. Farmland surrounding the fortification's would be sold to Mr Spencer at current market , value subject to the approval of the Land Settlement Board. “Mr Spencer has agreed to provide public access, possibly under the Walkways Act, over his present property to the fortifications. He has also agreed to provide

suitable stiles and signs along with a parking area at the existing road junction,” said Mr Elworthy. That arrangement, if endorsed by the board, should satisfy public concern about the preservation of the Stony Battery fortifications, he said. The sale issue aroused considerable controversy on the island.
