Commitment by Navy
NZPA-Reuter Singapore New Zealand’s commitment to the British Navy’s Indian Ocean task group would continue indefinitely said a New Zealand naval commander in Singapore yesterday. Commander David Wood, who arrived in the frigate Waikato after three months duty in the Persian Gulf with British warships, said the New Zealand frigate Canterbury was on her way to join the British group to replace ".his ship. New Zealand attached a warship to the British Navy for patrol duty in the Gulf during the Falklands crisis earlier, this year to enable Britain to free one of her own frigates for combat duty in the’ South Atlantic. The Waikato joined the British group in August. She had replaced the Canterbury, the first New Zealand frigate placed under British command as part of the offer to help Britain. Commander Wood, whose task group included the British ships Grey Rover and Alacrity, told Reuters there was no change in New Zealand’s offer of naval support as long as Britain needed it. The Waikato, after a seven-month voyage, will leave, Singapore for New Zealand; today. - -
