Wgtn opens tour with Ulster loss
NZPA London The Wellington provincial rugby side opened its sixmatch tour of Ireland and Britain on a sombre note
when it was beaten, 29-14, by Ulster in Belfast yesterday. A failure to use the wind in the first half, some silly mistakes and a lack of discipline contributed to Wellington’s defeat, its manager, Mr Brian Frederikson, said after the , game. “But I don’t think it’s a demoralising loss, even though we were beaten by five tries to two,”, he said. “On the pleasing side, we saw patches of the old Wellington team driving through. And a pleasing aspect was that our boys came up against a team prepared to spin th? ball which we haven’t had much of in New Zealand.” “We just failed to use the wind in the first half and didn’t put the high ball up,” Mr Frederikson said. “The backline kicked too much in the first half, “Wellington gave away some stupid penalties. There were some Silly mistakes and a lack of discipline. And some of the backs were disappointing in their tackling.” Pleased with the atmosphere in which the game was played, Mr Frederikson said: “there wasn’t one instance of any fist-throwing.” Wellington play Leinster next, in Dublin tomorrow. ' Scorers: Ulster (tries, Ringland (2), Crossan (2), Hewitt; conversions, Goodrich, Palmer (2); penalty Goodrich) 29; Wellington (tries, Fraser, Reale; penalty, Hewson; dropped goal, Hewson) 14.
