Games security boosted

NZPA New Delhi Indian security forces yesterday tightened the already heavy security round New Delhi and arrested more Sikh militants who are threatening to demonstrate during the 33-nation Asian Games which open today. Police sources said that 50 Sikh agitators had been detained in the capital in 24

hours and more arrests had been made in the north Indian state of Punjab, where some 500 Sikhs have already been taken into custody. The crackdown came as the Government made lastminute efforts to persuade Sikh leaders to call off demonstrations planned to highlight a series of political and religious demands during the Games.

Armed police yesterday searched all buses and trains entering Delhi to stop Sikh demonstrators. The "Hindustan Times” newspaper yesterday quoted an extremist Sikh group as saying that a series of bomb scares and at least one explosion were planned in Delhi during the games, in which 5000 athletes from Asia and the Middle East will take part.
