Trains held up

Passengers on yesterday morning's train from Christchurch to Picton had to continue their journey by bus after two waggons of a goods train had derailed and blocked the line south of Kaikoura.

The cause of derailment of the waggons, which were carrying heavy containers, was not known last evening, said a Railways Corporation spokesman. It occurred when the goods train, bound for Christchurch, sidetracked to let the express train pass at Ferniehurst, 46km south of Kaikoura.

There was no damage to the train, tracks, or goods. Three extra buses had to be hired to carry 98 passengers booked on the Picton to Christchurch train yesterday afternoon. The buses were expected to reach Christchurch at 10.30 p.m. The line should have been cleared by about 7 p.m., but there was a delay in transhipping the containers from the goods train,
