Slow fight for runs

NZPA Perth England was making a stern, slow fight of its first innings at the W.A.C.A. ground on the opening day of the first test at Perth yesterday. At tea England was 140 for two. with the resolute opener. Chris Tavare. not out 45, and Allan Lamb not out 17. Sent into bat after losing the toss England lost the wicket of the opener, Geoff Cook, for only one run. made in a laborious 35 minutes at the crease. But the surviving opener, Tavare, was joined by the elegant left-hander, David Gower, and together they put on a valuable 95 runs in a vital second innings stand. The Australian fast bowler. Dennis Lillee, was involved in a controversial incident in his second over after lunch. Lillee vented his frustration at being refused an lbw decision against Gower by kicking the ball on the half-volley when it was played back to him from his next delivery by Gower. The ball flew over the England vice-captain's head and was caught on the full by Allan Border at fourth slip.

It was on this ground not quite a year ago that Lillee was involved in a kicking incident with the then Pakistan captain. Javed Miandad. Gower's half-century arrived in 105 minutes and included six fours and the England 100 was raised in 170 minutes from 39.5 overs. Tavare has been a model of patience but should have been dismissed when he was dropped in slips by Terry Aiderman on 35, from the bowling of Geoff Lawson. A total of 57 overs had been bowled by tea.
