Court action fails

NZPA . Sydney The former Australian test cricket captain, lan Chappell, yesterday lost a Supreme Court action against two newspapers which he claimed had defamed him. Chappell sued Mirror Newspapers. Ltd. over articles which appeared early this year in two of the company’s publications, the “Daily Mirror" and the “Australian." The article in the “Australian" alleged that Chappell

and the fast bowler. Dennis Lillee, had insulted their opponents and defied umpires. The article in the ".Mirror" claimed that Chappell had made derogatory references to the Yugoslav ancestry of the Australian fast bowler, Len Pascoe. The jury returned a verdict in favour of both newspapers after deliberating for two hours. Mr Justice Begg ordered Chappell to pay costs of the action.
