Grosvenor favourite for Derby
NZPA Perth Western Australian racing followers believe their local hero Rare Flyer can upset the Victorian champion. Grosvenor, in the $120,000 Western Australain Derby (2400 m at Ascot today. Grosvenor, which has beaten the best horses in Australia, will start a shortpriced favourite. However, Rare Flyer is sure to be well supported by punters after continuing a fairy-tale story for the trainer, Reg Rayment, this vear.
Grosvenor arrived in Perth last week-end and has settled in well, although he was troubled by flies and the
heat this week. He has pleased his race day jockey, John Miller, with an impressive preparation. His trainer. Geoff Murphy, is in Queensland recovering from a throat operation? and has not seen his star three-year-old work.
Murphy will also be represented in the Derby bv Chagemar. The Sydney trainer, Tommy Smith, has Together Again, which also worked well on Thursday, in the Derby. The winner of the Western Australian Derby will earn an invitation into the Channel Seven Australian Derby which will be run in Perth early in the new vear.
