Company may sue Customs

PA Auckland An Auckland publishing company is threatening to sue the Customs Department over the seizing of calendars featuring full-frontal male nudity. The Lawrence Publishing Company (N.Z.), Ltd, which publishes the homosexual magazine, "Out," fears the calendars will be out of date unless the department releases them for sale.

A spokesman for the company, Mr Brett Sheppard, said that sample copies of the nude calendar had been seized, and a second shipment of 500 copies was due to arrive from the United States. The Auckland Collector of Customs, Mr Michael Howley, said he could not comment on the threat of legal action as he had not yet received a letter from the publisher’s solicitor. However, he said the Justice Department decided when a case would be heard and defended cases were being set down for hearing next February. The publishers deny the calendars are indecent.
