Kett wins boys’ road race
David Kett. the national schoolboys' 3000 m track champion, had to muster a I sprint finish to win the Christchurch Big M intersecondary schools senior boys’ road race championship. Representing Shirley Boys’ High School. Kett was fully extended by another wellperformed track runner. Elliot Drayton (St Andrew’s College). They were shoul-der-to-shoulder over the last few hundred metres of the skm course before Kett edged ahead to win by a very narrow margin. Kelt’s success, and the sixth placing of John Gilbert, greatly assisted Shirley to victory in the teams' event. The junior boys’ title went to Christchurch Boys’ High School, but the individual 3km event was won by Simon Nalder (St Thomas's of Canterbury College). Both girls’ team titles went to Christchurch Girls’ High School. In the senior championship Kate Barry beat her Christchurch Girls’ schoolmate. Andrea Devine, to the tape, but the Christchurch Girls’ monopoly was interrupted in the junior contest when individual honours went to Karen Toner (Haglev High School).
