Annan’s flying start in speedway opener

Joe Annan made a flying start to the season at the Woodford Glen Speedway by taking his new 302 cu cm Ford to three wins from three starts in the Sportsman car class on Saturday. Annan's outstanding early form broke the stranglehold that the present class champion. Mike Allan, held throughout last season. Allan finished second in all three races on Saturday after starting behind Annan on the grid on each occasion. Geoff Deal, in a Mk HI Cortina. won the Coca-Cola saloon car feature race after the field had re-started twice because of accidents. Deal had to battle in all 10 laps to head off John Townshend’s 2.3 Chevette and Tony Blanchard. The expected challenge from the more powerful super saloons did not materialise. 'Tony Cardwell damaged his new Pontiac Firebird when he collided with Paul Williams' Camaro. Doug Smith, in a rebuilt Chevy Monza, was also caught up in the accident. His car was not damaged but when the race restarted he was at the rear of the field. Stephen Ware, in a Ford Falcon. crossed the line in second place but was later disqualified for spinning out the Capri of Warwick Leech. Peter Ross made a good start to the stock car season. He won

two races after avoiding the trouble encountered by some of his more notable rivals. Townshend carried on from where he left off last season by winning both four-cylinder saloon races. But his race times were well outside the record he established at the last meeting. Results.— Super Saloons, Bardahl race: A. Dingwall I, S. Ware 2, P. Williams 3. Jail Restaurant race: W. Leech 1.
