Horses dominate increased entries at Amberley show

Sunnv weather saw a good local turnout at the Amberley Agricultural and Pastoral show on Saturday. Gate takings were $1224. about $3OO less than last years show, but still above average. Dull morning weather in Christchurch was blamed for keeping more city visitors away but the show president. .Mr D. Petrie, said the day was still highly successful. The over-all number of entries was slightly more than last year, although the lamb classes showed the effects of the drought. Their numbers dropped by about a third. ' Horses dominated the programme. with more than • 1400 entries. Sheep' classes were also slightly larger and the cattle section continues to grow each vear. ’ "We are getting a lot of interest from some of the younger cattle breeders using Amberley as a place where they can compete with people of similar standards." said Mr Petrie. The goat section began about five years ago. Its judge. Mr R. A. Upston. of Ohoka, said the quality of entries showed a "terrific" improvement since he judged the same section two years ago.
