Drug count convictions
A Scottish, seaman convicted of importing and supplying cannabis resin told police he bought the drug in Bombay with the intention of selling it to pay off his house mortgage, said Detective Sergeant J. M. Lyall in the District Court yesterday. Angus Gillies, aged 30 (Mr S. G. Barker), was convicted on both charges by Judge Fogarty who committed him in custody’to the High Court for sentence at a time to be fixed. Gillies committed the two offences at Lvttelton on
October 5. Sergeant Lyall said the ocean-going ship on which Gillies was a seaman berthed at Lyttelton that day. Gillies met an associate he had known for some time and showed him several blocks of cannabis resin. Arrangements were then made to dispose of the drug. ‘ In a Lyttelton hotel 10 blocks of cannabis resin were sold by the associate to a third party for $2OOO. This money was then handed over to Gillies. When noliee and Customs
later searched the defendant’s cabin they found $l9BO in cash. It was then that Gillies, a first offender, said it had been his intention of selling it to pay off his house gageSergeant Lyall said that eight blocks of the drug, weighing 75.9 grams, were recovered.
