Cardinal dies Cardinal Giovanni Benelli, the outspoken Archbishop of Florence who was twice considered a leading Papal candidate, died last evening — four days after he suffered a massive heart attack. He was 61. The Italian news agency Ansa reported that Cardinal Benelli had died in the Florence University Careggi Hospital, where he had been in a coma since Friday. — Florence. U.N. vote
The United Nations General Assembly has turned down an effort to discredit Prince Norodom Sihanouk’s new Kampuchean coalition Government by a vote of 9029 with 26 abstentions. That was the result of a recorded vote on a proposal from Vietnam and 10 other countries that the Assembly reject the credentials of the delegation of Democratic Kampuchea headed by Sihanouk. — New York. Glemp in talks Pope John Paul II and the Polish Primate, Archbishop Josef Glemp, have started a thorough review of the crisis in Poland after the dissolution of the trade union Solidarity threw into disarray Church-State relations. The Vatican has maintained a strict silence about the contacts between the Pope and Archbishop Glemp. — Vatican City. Gadaffi hits out The Libyan leader, Muammar Gadaffi, has condemned the alleged United States intrusion into Libyan territory last year and' declared: “The people of the world will surely defeat United States imperialism.” ' Colonal Gadaffi. made the statements in a banquet speech after arriving on his first visit to China. — Peking. Volcano erupts The 2100-metre Mount Shirane volcano has erupted and blanketed surrounding areas with smoke and ash, but has caused no injuries or serious damage, said the police. Two people were killed and 17 injured in the last eruption in August 1976. — Nagano, Japan. Meter thefts Fifty-eight traffic wardens appeared in court charged with stealing 6.6 million crowns (NZ1.24 million) in one-crown (20c) coins from parking meters. The police said that since the 58 were suspended in August the weekly intake of parking fees in Stockholm iiud more than doubled. The prosecution said that the highest single sum stolen was 750,000 crowns (NZ140.039). - Stockholm.
