The day in Parliament
Five notices of motion were lodged when Parliament sat at 2.30 p.m. yesterday.
the petition of Cathleen Carter and 748 others praying that the dog-dosing subsidy remain was tabled by Mr C. B. Townshend (Nat., Kaimai). The petition of J. Clark and 233 others praying that an inquiry be started into the sale of the Stoney Batter property on Waiheke Island was tabled by Dr M. E. R. Bassett (Lab., Te Atatu).
The Land Tax Amendment Bill was introduced by the Minister in charge of the Inland Revenue Department, Mr Falloon, and set down for a second reading. Ministers answered 18 questions. The Estimates debate — the committee stages of the Appropriation Bill— was resumed with members debating the Transport estimates, but were interrupted by the 5.30 p.m. dinner adjournment.
After the House resumed at 7.30 p.m., debate on the transport, railways, and Crown Law Office estimates was completed. Debate on the Justice estimates ended after the House resumed and was followed by debate on Post Office electoral salaries. The estimates for the war pensions vote of the Social Welfare Department were completed before the House rose at 10.27 p.m.
