PA Wellington Over the last five years 12 Department of Social Welfare staff working in children’s homes have been disciplined for physically abusing children, the Minister of Social Welfare, Mr Young, has announced.

A further six were disciplined for professional misconduct. Of the 18 staff, nine were in Auckland.

Mr Young said five of the staff were disciplined then dismissed, while two others dismissed were later reinstated by a Public Service Appeal Board decision. Eight were disciplined and remained in their jobs, two were re-employed in other Social Welfare homes, and one re-employed “in other duties.”

A one-man investigation on a Human Rights Commission report detailing abuse of children in Social Welfare homes is to be finished soon.
