Donizetti scores first-up

By

W. R. CARSTON

Donizetti, a $30,000 purchase at the National Sales at Trentham last January, made an immediate return for his Christchurch owner, Mr Cyril Smith, when she proved too swift for the other two-year-olds in the Morwenstow Juvenile at Rangiora yesterday. Donizetti, a member of John Bourne's Riccarton stable, was a chance mount for the Washdyke apprentice, Raymond Bruce. He replaced Tito Poblete who failed to make it to the meeting because of illness. Donizetti, a colt by Bellissimo out of Lady Hi Bing, a half-sister to the former top handicapper. Hi Bing, disputed the pace till the

home turn with Ebony Lace. He shook off the attentions of that rival before the straight entrance, had to cope with a brief challenge from Young Nick as they began the run home but was always completely in control of the situation and drew away again to win by two and a half lengths. Young Nick, a three-quar-ter brother to the top-ranked Queen’s Pal and a stablemate of that runner, was in no danger of losing second after receiving a perfect trailing run behind the coleaders till the home turn. Young Nick was three lengths in advance of the Rangiora-trained All Trebles, which was clear of King of Charm at the head of the others.
