Six centuries

Although heavy rain forced early finishes to many lowergrade matches in the Canterbury association's competitions on Saturday, six batsmen reached centuries.

Two of the century-makers were in the second grade. Ewen Spence, vice-captain of the Sydenham senior team for the last two seasons, made his first century after 12 seasons. He had been dismissed in the 90s on seven previous occasions. Spence was unbeaten on 100 against Riccarton.

George Harper, a former senior player for East-Shirley, had an identical score when his team declared at 286 for four against Marist. Another East-Shirley player to make 100 was last season's senior captain, Graham Pulley, who was undefeated on that figure for the club's president's grade team which played Riccarton.

The other century-makers were G. Boyle (Linwood High School), whose 121 not out was the highest score of the day, against Riccarton in the third grade; S. Ditfort (Xavier), who made 113 in the fifth grade; and H. Ott (Old Collegians), who scored 104 in the sixth grade.

Bowlers did not have much success. The outstanding figures were returned by W. Atkinson, who claimed seven wickets for 16 for East-Shirley B against Burnside-West in the ninth grade. Police suffered a surprise' loss in the president’s grade, the man responsible for Old Collegians’ win being John Thomson, who took five wickets for six off 10 overs. Police made 101 and Old Collegians reached their target with seven wickets standing. Scores:—
