Foil titles to in-form fencers
PA Auckland Fencers Wayne Hudson of Auckland and Lesley Calver of Wellington have won their second national foil titles, at the national championships in Auckland.
Both have had excellent seasons. Calver, in her leadup to the championships, made a clean sweep of domestic titles. She won the North Island, South Island, Wellington, and Auckland individual foil titles. Hudson, the Oceanic foil champion -in 1981, has won the Auckland foil and epee titles and the North Island foil championship.
In the final round on Friday. Hudson won each of his five bouts. Second was Steve Clarke, the defending champion from Canterbury. In the absence of Anya Tait, the dual New Zealand and Australian representative, Calver dominated the women’s event, with an Australian, Andrea Chaplin, aged 18. •
They were the only two with four wins in the final round and fought a barrage to decide the winner.
The Australian southpaw was handicapped by a sore arm which will heed an operation. However, she conceded only six hits in the final round. Five of those were to Calver.
Andrew Harmos of Auckland regained the individual sabre title he last held in 1979. He beat the 1980 champion, Richard Peterson, 5-2 in the barrage.
Auckland A was unbeaten to win the men’s foil team event. Wellington had a similar record to Win ’ the women’s foil teams title. The South Island fielded a composite team which beat Auckland A and B, but it was not eligible for a placing.
