Broodmare award to Princess Mellay

PA Wellington The former top racemare, Princess Mellay, has been named the 1981-82 "Broodmare of the Year.” Princess Mellay was selected from nine broodmares recommended to the New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association and her award was announced yesterday by the association’s secretary. Steven Brem. Princess Mellay, which w’on 18 races including the New Zealand Oaks and two New Zealand Cups, is the dam of the fine weight-for-age galloper Prince Majestic, which was placed 13 times from 15 starts last season, winnng seven.

Prince Majestic was rated second behind Kingston Town on the combined Aus-tralian-New Zealand classificaation for four-year-olds and over at 2000 m plus. Princess Mellay is also the dam of Tiara, winner of two

open handicaps last season, and Rock Crystal, the winner of one race. Other broodmares considered included the 1980-81 joint winners The Pixie (dam of The Twinkle, The Dimple and The Imposter) and Tainona (dam of Sovereign Red and Gurner’s Lane). The others were High Trick (Altitude), Ernader (McGinty), Rauriki (Silver Bounty), Gold Diana (Gold Hope), Agree (Kip and Boktisan) and Full O’ Tricks (Isle of Mani.
