Two-year-olds stars of Riccarton training

Bv J. J. BOYLE

Two-year-olds put fresh interest into yesterday’s training at Riccarton as they went through their paces for close-at-hand engagements at the North Canterbury and New Zealand Cup meetings. Auk Princess and Salutation sprinted on terms from the 800 m on the trial grass in 48.45. Auk Princess had no luck in the running in the McLean Stakes at Wingatui, but could fare better in the Morwenstow Juvenile at the North Canterbury meeting. Prince Gloaming and Donne M'Dash came up with 49 over the same distance on the trial grass. Like Auk Princess they had luck in the

barrier draw for the Morwenstow Handicap.

Donizetti, an attractive Bellissimo colt in John Bourne’s team, was clear of a Turn the Tide colt finishing 800 on the outside of the course proper in 52.4. Tito Poblete will ride Donizetti at Rangiora.

Weinmeister and Third Degree started a gallop over a bit of ground on the outside of the course proper in teams but Third Degree dropped out into a long gap in the home straight.

Weinmeister finished his 1800 in 2min 3.85. the last 800 in 55.2.

Third Degree has been treated for foot trouble, and the firmness of the track

yesterday probably affected his effort. The fastest mover of those few' to gallop on the outside of the course proper was the veteran Miles Better. As part of his build-up for the North Canterbury Cup he ran the last 800 m of his task in 51.8.

Upper Cut did not have to extend himself to beat Silver Gale over 1200 m, in Imin 24.25. They started briskly, but the pace slackened sharply when Silver Gale dropped behind, and Upper Cut took 58.4 for his last 800 m.
