Redundancies at Chch Toyota
The Christchurch carassembly plant of Toyota N.Z.. Ltd. has joined other car-assembly companies in inviting production workers to become voluntarily redundant.
Until this week the company had overcome the problem of stockpiling because of a fall-off in new car sales by cutting hours of work and bonuses by 20 per cent. The general manager of Toyota, Mr R. L. Field, said from Wellington yesterday that with all the publicity about redundancies the company had had a lot of inquiries from its staff, and had decided this week to invite them to apply for
voluntary redundancy. He declined to say how many redundancies were needed, but said that the Engineers' Union had been consulted.
The staffing situation was being reviewed on a daily basis. New car sales had fallen 25 to 30 per cent in August and September and there was no sign yet this month of any pick up. Thirty voluntary redundancies will be sought from today at the Subaru carassembly plant at Waitara, in Taranaki, at a time when a new car production area had just been completed in anticipation of an upsurge in demand next year. The plant has a staff of 140.
