Former consul honoured
A toast to France ... by three past and present diplomatic representatives of Franch in New Zealand: Mr Jacques Bourgoin, the French Ambassador (middle), Mr Lloyd Upton, the honorary French consul in Christchurch, and his predecessor, Mr R. G. F. Kingscote (seated). They were joined by representatives of several other
countries at a function in Christchurch yesterday to mark the retirement of Mr Kingscote. He was awarded an Order of Merit for his services to France during almost a
quarter century as consular representative in Christchurch. Mr Kingscote’s father and grandfather also served as honorary French consuls in Christchurch, and received similar awards. His grandfather, George Humphreys, who founded the Christ-
church firm, Fletcher Humphreys, in the 1890 s, was consul from 1899 to 1934; and his father, Geoffrey Kingscote, held the post from 1934 to 1949. Mr Upton took over the Christchurch post when Mr Kingscote retired in May last year.
