School Cert, candidates down 1251

PA Wellington In less than a month. 73.836 candidates will sit the School Certificate examination in 327.992 subjects, representing a drop of 1251 candidates and 1021 entries on last year.

The drop is consistent with the decrease in candidates first noticed in 1979 as a result of falling school rolls.

The 1982 School Certificate round will begin with English - the most popular subject, attracting 53,104 entries — on November 17.

Figures given by the Education Department yesterday show mathematics second, with 39.675 entries, followed by science. 31.335. and geography. 26.951.

Meanwhile, a relatively new subject for School Certificate. horticulture, has this year attracted a 63 per cent increase in entries, up from 383 to 626. Accountancy, which is being examined for the second time, shows an increase in entries from 3162' to 8699.

There is a corresponding drop in the number of bookkeeping candidates, which is being phased out in favour of accountancy next year.
