Miles Better, back from Q’land, in at Rangiora

By

J. J. BOYLE

Miles Better will be embarked on his nine-year-old career in the $6500 North Canterbury Cup (2000 m at Rangiora next Monday.

It will be his first race on a New Zealand course since Easter, but since then he has been campaigned in Queensland.

A win eluded him there, but he picked up $6500 with minor placings, which included a dead-heating second in the Tattersall’s Cup at Eagle Farm. Firpo, another veteran, is the only horse above Miles Better in the weights for the first leg of the North Canterbury club’s T.A.B. double.

Form runners lower in the handicap include John Peel, which won this race last year, but was involved in a fall when he was attempting to improve his record on the Rangiora course last autumn. The Wade Sports 1200 will be the second leg of the T.A.B. double. The first of three T.A.B. quinellas will be on the Canterbury Building Society Mile, for three-year-olds.

Two of the form runners, Every Show and Laughing Lover, are also acceptors for the Gore Guineas on Saturday. The Riccarton-trained Clansman, which failed in the Wellington Guineas last Saturday, is also in the Rangiora race. Race 1
