Combined exercise

PA Wellington The east coast of the North Island has become the “battle ground," for the Tasmanex four-nation air and sea exercise. Warships and submarines taking part in the 10-day exercise moved through Cook Strait over the week-end after a concentrated series of opposed actions between Cape Egmont and Queen Charlotte Sound. The exercise involving warships and aircraft from New Zealand, Australia, Can-

ada, and Britain began off Australia on October 11. A big sea “battle" took place bff Lord Howe Island when the New Zealanders and Canadians met the opposing Australian force. When steaming towards New Zealand, in company, the Task Group came under a series of New Zealandbased attacks from Skyhawks, Strike Masters, submarines, and patrol craft. The exercise will end off Auckland tomorrow.
