One of a fleet of six Hercules aircraft bound for McMurdo Station in Antarctica waits at the United States Antarctic support force base at Christchurch Airport yesterday. Five of the Hercules, which arrived at the base on Friday and Saturday in readiness for the season on the ice, were due to fly to McMurdo Station today, leaving hourly from 3.30 a.m. Their cargo includes supplies, and helicopters and their crews. The sixth Hercules, with its cargo of a helicopter, will leave for Antarctica on Sunday. This will complete the complement of men to spend the next four to five months on the ice. The Hercules fleet will work from McMurdo Station ferrying supplies to other bases and camps. The helicopters will provide support for field parties.
