Mr J. F. Tutton was prominent racing owner
Mr Jack Tutton. who died in Christchurch last week, was a successful Canterbury owner of thoroughbreds for several years, and for a time conducted a stud in the Swannanoa district. He raced the good winners Shoal and McCool in partnership with his wife, Marie, who bred them from the Beau Pere mare, Belle Fille. Shoal (by Dogger Bank) counted a Canterbury Cup and a Dunedin Cup among her successes, and her massive younger half-brother McCool (by Balloch) won several races, including a Great
Autumn Handicap. The home-bred Natter brought further lustre to the Belle Fille family by winning the New Zealand Oaks in 1965. Then, to a mating with Final Orders, which stood at the Tutton-owned stud at Swannanoa, she left the brilliant young galloper. Shudup, whose wins included the C. J. C. Champagne Stakes and the Great Easter. To a mating with Final Orders, Shoal left the highclass but ill-fated filly, Dhow. This speedster’s major triumphs were in the C. J. C. Welcome Stakes, the Dunedin
Champagne Stakes, the John Grigg Stakes, the Lowland Stakes, and the New Zealand (Wellington) Guineas. Unfortunately Dhow died soon after her Trentham triumph. Zinder, which had won the New Zealand St Leger for Mr Derrick Gould, did much of his later racing in the Tutton colours, and his wins after he changed hands included a Timaru Cup. Mr Tutton, who had a flour milling business in the Rangiora district, was also a motor sports enthusiast for many years.
