U.S. on verge
The United States may be on the verge of one of its longest periods of sustained economic growth, the American Treasury Secretary. Mr Donald Regan, said in a ■ magazine interview. Mr Regan said that a sustained increase of 3.5 per cent to 4 per cent in the gross national product for several years was possible because of reduced inflation and interest rates, pent-up demand for homes, cars and other goods and new products.—Washington.
Plane hit by fire
An Egyptair Boeing 707 airliner ran off the runway, caught fire and lost a wing on landing after a flight from Cairo. Two of the 174 passengers were slightly injured, the airport police said. The wing broke off as the plane ran on to nearby grass and swivelled around.— Geneva.
