Divers seek sub.
NZPA Stockholm The Royal Swedish Navy’s chief spokesman said yesterday that he was “more optimistic than before” of a solution of the submarine chase which entered a twelfth day. as divers continued to comb through areas of the Mysingen Bay and Hors Bay.
The statement marked the first positive reaction from the military since the weekend. when they began downplaying their chances of catching any of the elusive foreign intruders. The Navy said yesterday that divers from the submarine salvage ship Belos had begun searching the waters of Hors Bay and Muysingen Bay. where the Navy had exploded a powerful mine earlier. The mire was set off at the southern outlet of Mysingen Bay. near, the place where four half-ton mines were exploded on Thursday. “The divers are searching a limited area but also wider areas of the two bays,” Captain Sven Carlsson said. The Belos is equipped with a diving bell which can possibly be used to rescue a submarine crew.
Meanwhile, the Stockholm morning newspaper, “Dagens Nyheter” reported that the mine had been detonated “without delay right on the object when it passed the minefield,” and that “a large spot of mud and oil" was sighted in the water in the area after the explosion. But Captain Carlsson said he had no information on any spot of oil
