Container ships hit by trade downturn
Some container ships that make regular calls to New Zealand ports are being laid up because of a lack of trade, according to a shipping industry source. The ships, carrying meat and dairy produce, are being hit mainly by a slump in North American trade. The United Kingdom trade has been marginally affected in comparison. ‘‘There is a possibility of 10 to 12 ships being made idle,” the. source said. One ship has dropped off 300 containers at the Wellington terminal, but they may not be needed for seven to eight months. ■ “This is most unusual at this time of the year. Normally we would be scrounging for containers. but it is a different story now." the scource said. . The downturn was “quite dramatic.” Trade with North America should be picking up now, but there is no sign of the annual pre-Christmas improvement. . Three of the shipping lines affected are Farrell Lines, of the United States, Columbus Line,
Germany, and the British Conference Lines Consortium. ARRIVALS Union Hobart (7 a.m.). 7299. Wellington (U.M.S.). Nedlloyd Frazer (9 a.m.). 8155, Dunedin (Guthrey).
