Chch crime up
Parliamentary reporter The number of crimes reported in the Christchurch police district has increased 86.7 per cent in the last 10 years, the Minister of Police, Mr Couch, has told Parliament. In a written reply to a question by Mr M. K. Moore (Lab., Papanui), Mr Coueh said that 24,729 offences were reported in 1971 and 46,166 reported this year. The biggest increase was in violent crime, which had
risen 62 per cent since 1978. Some offence classifications had been changed in 1978. and so it was not possible to compare 1972 and 1982 figures, he said. Since 1978, increases had been recorded in offences of property abuse (58 per cent), property damage (44 per cent), dishonesty (29 per cent), and drugs and antisocial crimes (24 per cent). Administrative offences had increased 40 per cent and traffic offences almost 4 per cent.
