Minister gives factory count for Chch
Parliamentary reporter The Number of factories in Christchurch has increased since October. 1977. according to figures given in Parliament by the Minister of Labour. Mr Bolger. Replying to a question by Mr M. K. Moore (Lab., Papanui), Mr Bolger said that there had been a total of 878 new factory registrations since October. 1977. In the same time 810 factories had closed. In the year ended March, 1979. 161 new factories opened and 215 factories closed. In 1980. 185 opened and 124 closed. In 1981. 196 opened and 167 closed. In the
vear ended March. 1982. 189 factories were opened and 141 closed. In the five months from April to August this year, there had been 118 factory closings in Christchurch. Ninety-one new factories had opened. Mr P. K. Burden (Nat.. Fendalton), who put the same question to the Minister of Trade and Industry, Mr Templeton, yesterday, later said that he was heartened by the figures. They showed that there was commercial progress in Christchurch, in spite of the difficult financial times.
