Spanish judge charges trio
NZPA-Keuter Madrid A Spanish military judge yesterday formally charged three Army officers with conspiracy to rebellion as demands mounted for the detention of all people suspected of involvement in a foiled coup. Officials said that the two colonels and a lieutenantcolonel. arrested last weekend on suspicion of preparing a military take-over to thwart a likely Socialist victory in elections this month, would remain in prison until tried.
The charges against Colonels Luis Munoz Gutierrez and Jesus Crespo Cuispinera and his brother.
Lieuienant-Colonel Jose Crespo Cuspinera. carry a minimum prison sentence of six vears.
Official sources told reporters that their plans centred on the capture of the King and Government in Madrid and a call for a nationwide Army uprising on October 27.
This is the day before the General Election expected to bring the Socialists back to power for the first time in four decades.
The deputy Socialist leader. Alfonso Guerra, said that some 200 officers were involved in the plot and demanded that all should be detained.
