Robbers stole $1000 from shop
About $lOOO in cash was stolen in the armed hold-up of the Keystores shop in Kendal Avenue. Burnside, on Thursday evening, the police confirmed yesterday.
The robbers, described as large, well built Polynesians or Maoris, were still free last evening in spite of an extensive police search. Their getaway car had been followed as far as Greers Road by a woman shopper who had seen two men sprint from the store with stockings over their heads and drive off without lights.
The woman had decided “on the spur of the moment" to trail the robbers, who were armed with a pistol and a softball bat.
Detective Sergeant P. N. Gardiner said yesterday that the only witnesses the police had been able to find were the woman and the manager of the store, Mr Noel Voice. Mr Voice was alone in the store when the robbers walked in at 8.15 p.m. He had been preparing to close after late-night trading.
The robbers had demanded only notes, ignoring coins and merchandise in the shop. Mr Voice told the police. A squad of detectives is working on the inquiry.
