Middle East problems
Sir,—The anti-Israel bias of Dr Maclntyre (October 2) is a most disturbing trait in one to whom the political education of some New Zealand youth has been entrusted. This "so-called democratic country," as your correspondent disparagingly refers to Israel, recently toler-
ated large public demonstrations in Tel Aviv critical of Israeli Government Lebanese policy, as the conflict was actually in progress. Also Israeli Army officers resigned in protest over the Lebanon policies: Are not these hallmarks of democracy? Dr Maclntyre's .reference to Israel’s “appropriation of large tracts of Arab land" completely ignored the tremendous sacrifice Israel made in returning Sinai to Egypt. His "equation” of Israels' culpability in the Beirut camp massacre with the worst excesses of the. Nazis is pathetically unbalanced. What Arab countries today are more democratic than Israel? Had we sold meat to democratic Israel rather than Iran we would now be $150,000,000 better off.—Yours, etc., B. CRAWLEY; October 2, 1982.
