Tennis on radio but not live on TV

New Zealand will meet France in the Davis Cup semi-final in France on Friday. through to Sunday, the first time New Zealand has reached this level in Davis Cup tennis. Radio New Zealand will provide commentary on the community network from the 8.8. C. Wimbledon commentator. Max Robertson. Interest will be high because if the New Zealand team makes it to the final that will be played in Auckland against either Australia or the United States. As well as commentaries the community stations will also broadcast previews each day in the 6 p.m. sports news and reviews, again in sports news, at 9 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday and at 7 a.m. on Monday. Details of radio coverage:- -

Singles.—Full commentary on the "Tonight Show" and all-night programme from the start of play on Friday at 11.30 p.m. (New Zealand time).

Doubles.—Full commentary on the "Tonight Show" and all-night programme on Saturday night and Sunday morning. It is hoped that play will be completed before 7 a.m. on Sunday because then the community network will take its regular commitment, the children's Sunday programme. "Space Station Z."

Reverse singles.—Games that will be cliff hangers, or non-events, depending on the outcome of the first three matches. Commentary on the community network * from Sunday night through to Monday morning. If the results are crucial to the final result of the tie, commentary will still be available to stations into the breakfast session. TV coverage Television New Zealand has been unable to arrange live telecasts of the Davis Cup competition because all satellite channels were booked by other organisations long before the Davis Cup dates were announced. However, TVNZ is endeavouring to arrange a one-hour edited package each day. A TVNZ sports producer, Mr lan Walter, said a “telex war" was going on over this. The French TV network had refused to edit a Davis Cup package, and "TVNZ was trying to get a private production house to do the job.
