Tahitian feuding subsides
NZPA Papeete The feuding, name-calling and infighting that caused a week of trouble in Tahiti appears to have ended with the formation of a new coalition to preside, over the Territorial Assembly. Gaston Flosse, aged 50, whose party controls 13 of the 30 seats in the assembly, announced yesterday that he had joined "forces. with John Teariki, aged 67,. who controls six seats. '
It marks the first time in Tahitian political history that the two parties, - the largest in' French Polynesia, have formed an alliance. Mr Flosse's bld coalition with Emile Vernaudon, whose party, holds three seats, broke up last week after an uneasy 117-day alliance that ended in a flurry of written accusations and counter-accusations, back-to-back ■ news conferences and charges of bad faith.
Mr Flosse dissolved the partnership after falling out with Mr, Vernaudon over the issue of increased economic autonomy for : the French overseas territory.
He also accused him of trying to sabotage the sevenmember Government council. which runs the island group’s day-to-day affairs.
