Third Degree to be aimed at N.Z. Cup

Dunedin Peter Jones, the Riccarton trainer, announced , plans to run Third Degree in the New Zealand Cup after the gelding had easily won the Salisbury Handicap at Wingatui on Saturday. “I had the cup in mind for him two years ago,” said Jones. “He has taken a lot: of making and is a lot more solid now." Jones feels/that Third Degree is close to his peak and he will start the five-year-old Honourary Degree-Discover gelding at either Orari or Motukarara to top him off for the New : Zealand Cup
meeting. Third Degree won easily ■ over 2200 m on Saturday. After racing close to the pace he joined the leader at the 800 m and forged to the front entering the home
straight. Third Degree is raced by George Hutton, his son George of Darfield, and a son-in-law, Tim Saunders, of Auckland. The Huttons have raced several horses, includ- . ing Joint Effort (eight wins), Town and Country, Lovely Clover, Owenga and Apollon. Joint Effort was unplaced in a New Zealand Cup but Jones has had placings in the race with His Lordship and His Bestone, which finished second to Watallan in 'the 1973 New Zealand Cup. -The Huttons and Mr Saunders bred Third Degree after buying Discover from Miss Janet Grigg, of Longbeach. Discover is oy Agricola from We’ll Find Out, and traces to Ballyclare, which was imported to New Zealand from Ireland- by Miss Grigg’s father, Mr John Grigg, to breed, aGrand National Steeplechase winner.
