Army engineers in Tonga

PA Wellington Three New Zealand Army engineers have left for Tonga to supervise the construction of prefabricated houses on the outlying islands of the Ha'apai group. A team of Tonga Defence Service personnel will be assigned to each engineer, who will train them in construction techniques. The houses will replace those destroyed by Hurricane Isaac which'devastated large areas of Tonga in March this year, an Army spokesman said.

The engineers are expected to spend six weeks in Tonga and following their departure the Tonga Defence Service will take over A second team of Army engineers has just returned to New Zealand from Tonga where they spent six weeks clearing a passage through reefs to facilitate access for coastal vessels to the island of Lifuka, also in the Ha'apai group. A third team is at present in Tonga supervising the construction of a new trade training workshop for the Tonga Defence Service.
