Canty teams named for national championships
By
RAY CAIRNS
The rules of the Canterbury Amateur Cycling Centre, which provide for a number of automatic selections in teams for national championships, had the selectors. Messrs B. E. Dawe and G. T. Fowler, in a real bind at Sefton on Saturday. Their main problems related to the junior team where, as with the seniors, the first six won places as of right. That did not create any problem with the first three, Glen Fuller, Malcolm Robertson, and Jamie Nisbet, but the next three were Dave Andrews, Chris Newsome, and Michael Hazeldine.
None of the three, though not Andrews to quite the same degree, would have figured in serious contention for places before the championships. But they had to be picked, and with Greg Hume, Paul Clare, and a late crash victim, Peter Coates, virtually essential selections, only one place remained. That went to Michael
McLister, a deserved choice, but it cost positions to Richard Lauder, (named the reserve), who has had a quite an exceptional first season, and Dean Lovett and Craig Fenton, an aggressive pair in the championship, and with sound credentials for selection for the national championship course at Upper Hutt.
If Craig Nichols had been available, there would have been an even worse situation, for he was another certain choice. For the first time in several seasons, a full senior team was also named, including Brian Fowler of the Games team, but with Blair Stockwell unavailable because of a family wedding. There is even a reserve. Tony Salole, but he is likely to graduate to the team proper, because Wayne Howes. Warren Meggitt. and Dave Hewson, of the Timaru 100 km team, are likely to be available only for the team time trial event should they qualify. The eight novices named.
team proper and reserves,, are all from the Mairehau club, and include Jason Smith, who crashed in the championship. He is clearly seen as a potential winner, and justifiably, too; on the same basis. Martin Shaw deserved a mention, at least. With the veterans’ and women’s teams still to be confirmed, and the time trial squads not to be named until next week, the teams in addition to the juniors are: Senior.— Greg Cox, Brent Kircher, Fowler (General LeeCarpet Market-Supertred), Greg Fraine, Paul Miller, Brent Cowie (Papanui). Hewson, Howes. Meggitt. . Jim Ryder (Timaru). Reserve. Tony Salole (Woolston WMC). William Rastrick' (Papanui was not available.
Novice.— Philip Gibbs. Wayne Eyre. Ross Brimer. Shayne Hendren. Andrew Mcßeth. Smith. Reserves: Russell Higgins. Alan Girvin (all Mairehau). Veteran— Alan Hood. John Tait (Papanui). Grant Inwood. Don Johnson. Jack Hill, Les Fibbens (Woolston WMC). Basil Ensor (Timaru) was not available.
