Hulme to win Rookie of Year
The former world champion driver, Denny Hulme. is eligible to win the Rookie of the Year award in the James Hardie 1000 in Australia next month.
The former “king" of the grand prix circuits will make his first appearance at Mt Panorama, in Bathhurst, New South Wales, on Sunday, October 3. This makes him eligible for the $2OOO Rookie award made each year to the Bathhurst first-timer who finishes highest in outright placings, irrespective of age or qualifications.
Hulme's most serious rivals among the 64 contestants include three drivers less than half his age. He is also opposed by another world champion driver, the Australian. Alan Jones, the 1980 Formula One winner.
The two drivers represent two generations of grand prix competition. It is also the first time that two world champions have lined up at the Bathhurst starting line. Hulme, now aged 46. is to pair with Sydney production
driver, Stephen Brook, in a BMW 7 635 coupe. In 1967 Hulme emerged from playing understudy to Sir Jack Brabham to win the world crown for the Brabham team. He then became a vital part of the McLaren team after Bruce McLaren's death and continued a career with major wins in Formula One, Formula 5600 and Can-Am.
Hulme won 10 grands prix in all, the last being the 1974 Argentine race. He remains ■a regular competitor in the Benson and Hedges Classic, the New Zealand equivalent of the James hardie 1000. Hulme leaves for Australia on Tuesday, September 28, and is confident of a grand Bathhurst initiation. • The James Hardie 1000 has been an annual motor sports event for the past 21 years and offers prizes totalling $lOO,OOO.
Highlights of the race will be shown in an hour-long programme on "Sport ■on One,” on Saturday. October 16.
