Softball entries reduced
Twilight games, doubleheaders, and Sunday games are all part of the fare in senior A men’s softball this season, though the number of teams has been reduced from eight to six. From last season’s senior A teams neither Wheke nor Lyttelton put in entries and, rather than have a seventeam grade, it was decided to decline a new entry, Woolston United. However, Woolston, coached by the former Canterbury catcher, Mike
Nelepa, will have another chance to break into what will effectively be Senior A softball. After Christmas a top four and bottom four system will be adopted with the top two teams from senior B promoted. The senior A teams will initially be Noel Leeming Burnside, United, Papanui, Western Suburbs, Richmond, and Albion. Competition will begin on October 2 with every team playing double-headers so that the .Canterbury Softball
Association can cover itself for days lost later in the season.
Mr Dale Eagar, president of the C.S.A., said. that the idea was to get three full rounds in before Christmas and at the end of each round there would be Sunday games featuring the top seeds from last year, Burnside v. United in the men and Albion v. Burnside in the women.
“We want to highlight the top games." said Mr Eagar. “Ideally, we would like the
teams to win one each so that the last one is a crunch game." The Sunday games would probably be played at Western Ball Park.
The women’s competition has the same six teams as last season — Albion, Burnside, United, Western Suburbs, Monowai, and Papanui.
Once again the senior competitions have gained the sponsorship of Dalgety Travel.
