‘Code of conduct could kill Games’
NZPA staff correspondent Sydney The proposed Commonwealth Games code of conduct on sports contact with South Africa could light a fuse that would eventually destroy the Games, the Australian Senate was told. Senator Michael Townley, a Government member from Tasmania, asked if the Australian Government had seen, considered or approved the code. He asked the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Street, if he would consult the Games Federation “and suggest they
keep out of playing politics and get on with what they are meant to be doing - running the Games, instead of lighting the fuse that could eventually destroy them.” Senator Margaret Guilfoyle, for Mr Street answered that the Australian Government would not be a participant at the Commonwealth Games Federation’s meeting in Brisbane or October 6 which will consider the constitutional amendments. "The issue is one for decision by sports administrators.” she said.
