Hughes leads side off
NZPA Karachi Play .was suspended for 14 minutes before lunch in the First Test yesterday when Kim Hughes’led the' Australians off the field after a barrage of rocks, onions and potatoes were thrown on to the ground by an unruly 2000 spectators in the stand usually occupied by students. The noisy section had been building up during the morning, with whistles, bugles, chanting, singing, jeering and booing directed at Geoff Lawson. Two minutes before noon Hughes had had enough. He had an earlier conversation with an umpire. Khizar Hayat in which he threatened to leave the field if the throwing continued. Greg Ritchie had picked up a sizeable rock near him and had
thrown it to umpire Hayat. striking him on the leg. Hughes explained to the umpire that the Queenslander had sent it over for. the umpire to see the danger the Australian fielders were facing. Hughes then led the Australians from the field and Karachi Cricket Association officials and the Commissioner for Karachi. M. Musmani ran in front of the troublesome stand. ' Spokesmen for the demonstrators said they were protesting about the selection of Zaheer Abbas.. the lack of overhead protection in the open stand as well as their feelings about the Australians. ~.'/)' Play then resumed for 15 minutes and at lunch Pakistan were three wickets for 242, 42 behind the Australian first innings total of 284 /’"'.
