Arnoux unbeatable?
NZPA Las Vegas The Frenchman. Rene Arnoux set a punishing pace in blistering desert heat to head the field yesterday in his turbo-charged Renault after the first practice session for today's Las Vegas Grand Prix. The Frenchman, aged 34, who won the Italian Grand Prix two weeks ago and also won in his home country, had a time of one minute 17.868 seconds for this 3.6-kilometre (2.26-mile) track - only a fraction behind the record qualifying lime of .1:17.821. Arnoux. who will race for Renault for the last time today before switching to Ferarri next season, was al-
most a second faster- than Michele Alboreto. of Italy, in a Tyrrell, who had the second-best time of 1:18.756 on this tight, twisting car park track. Keke Rosberg, of Finland, the strong favourite to win the world driving championship in this final race of the season, stood a respectable fifth after a 1:19.162 in his Williams. The former world champion. Niki Lauda, of Austria, had the sixth-best time and his McLaren teammate. John Watson, finished in 10th place. The McLaren drivers arc the only two who could take the title away from Rosberg, and both have to win.
