Charles Beaufort, a contemporary and stablemate of the John Grigg Stakes winner Clansman, should be one of Riccarton’s brightest hopes for the first day of the Otago spring meeting on Saturday.
His mission this week will be the Auckland Handicap, in which he will be ridden by the Wingatui horseman. Ali Robinson. Charles Beaufort finished sixth in the John Grigg Stakes after being slowest away. He looks as if he has thrived in the meantime, and went about his work attractively while running 800 m on the No. 1 grass at Riccarton yesterday. The Riccarton team at Wingatui will have several reinforcements for- the second day of the meeting. One of them. Acadia, will race there in blinkers, and the experiment could be rewarding. She sprinted 800 m
in 47 when paired with her stablemate Fairway Lass on the grass yesterday. Loriana and Babooshka, other members of Michael Pitman’s team, and acceptors for Wingatui on Saturday. will be galloped this morning. Dark Trophy, a promising two-year-old in the Pitman stable, and an entrant for the McLean Stakes next week, was an attractive winner in one of several 600 m sprints from the starting gate yesterday. These trialists also ran bn the No. 1 grass and Dark Trophy returned 34 for his 600. Bianco Lad. another McLean Stakes candidate.
was an attractive winner of the first heat from the starting gate. He dashed in. three lengths clear of a BaliosLady Chief colt from the Harris team. Bianco Lad, a half-brother to Bianco Lady, a good winner in Sydney last season, is a member of the Beri team, which will be quartered at Wingatui for the southern spring circuit. God Free shaded Gay’s Pal and Kusadasi in the closest finish of the barrier trials, but Limerick's Image .was a clear-cut winner of the third heat with a run that showed' his fitness for the Geraldine meeting. » Peter Jones, who will send
the Washdyke winners Third Degree and Silver Gale south for the first day of the Otago meeting, has Damazam looking bright and strong for his engagement on the second day at Wingatui. Damazam partnered Weinmeister for 1600 m on the No. 1 grass yesterday. The slablemates finished with 800 m in 50.1 sec. The work on the plough was notable mainly for strong solo runs by Firefly and Another Storv over 1400 m. Firefly, in the hands of the jumps rider Barry Polling, continued her preparation for the Geraldine Cup by recording 1:30.8. and 37.6 for
the last 600 m. Another Story returned 1:30.6. the last 600 m also in 37.65ec.
