Wellington ‘chase worth $40,000

PA Wellington The stake for this seasons Wellington Steeplechase has been more than doubled, making it the richest jumping race in New Zealand. The race, set for July 9. will carry a stake of $40,000. Last year the race was worth ’519,600 and in 1980 $18,700. The increase comes through sponsorship. Last winter the Great Northern ’chase carried a stake iof $31,000 and the Great Northern Hurdles $26,000. The Grand National Steeplechase was worth $21,000 last August.

As well as the increase in the Wellington Steeplechase, subsidies advised by the NewZealand Racing Authority for all group races, has meant

that stakes will be increased as follows: the Wrightson Wellington Cup — $llO,OOO ($lOO,OOO last year): the George Adams Handicap — $45,000 (up $5000); the Dalgetv Stakes - $21,000. (tip $1000); the Telegraph Handicap - $25,000 (up $5000); and the Wakefield Challenge Stakes - $lB,OOO (up $3000). Stakes adjustments for the meeting next month have already been advised and the club has received further sponsorship for its . October meeting. The Pearce Handicap, a major 1600 m event on the second day of the spring meeting, has been renamed the Hutton’s Handicap and will be worth $20,000. double that of the Pearce last season. _
