Pilot has to land in sea

PA Gisborne A Gisborne pilot escaped uninjured after a forced landing in the sea off Gisborne Airport yesterday morning. Brian Emerson, aged 47. an experienced pilot, was taking part in a Battle of Britain commemorative formation flyover. He was flying a borrowed" Piper Cherokee which, he said, lost power on its landing approach,

Mr Emerson said he immediately carried out a forced landing procedure hoping to reach the beach or the airport runway. The strong headwind forced him down into the sea about 200 metres from shore. “I clambered out on to the wing and closed the door behind me to maintain buoyancy but the plane slowly filled with water and she sank about three minutes after the jet rescue boat reached me.”

The strong current then carried the plane to the breaker line where divers attached a line and a vehicle pulled it ashore. It was towed 2km by road to Gisborne Airport.
