$400,000 Maori job campaign

PA Wellington An estimated 5400.000 will be spent on a national campaign to train and find jobs for this year's Maori schoolleavers with no employment prospects. It will be the second rapu mahi (job-seeking) programme run on maraes during the long Christmas holidays and jointly funded by the Maori community and the Maori Affairs Department.

The initial campaign attracted 3583 young people. 583 more than the target. In preparation for a similar rush, the department has this year budgeted $200,000, almost $40,000 more than last year. As before, this figure is expected to be matched by fund-raising by maraes and Maori committees. Reporting the' programme’s results earlier this year, the department acknowledged that the job placement rate of 610 was well short of the target, but said the campaign was a success because of the jobs found and because it raised awareness.- particularly among Maori employers, of the problem.
